119. Free-Style High-Alcohol Light Ale

Free-Style High-Alcohol Light Ales are very pale to gold. Turbidity due to yeast and chill haze are allowed. These beers should reflect brewer's originality in overall characters, and may be entirely free from traditional beer style. Fruity esters are low to high. Hop aroma, flavor and bitterness are variable depending on intentions of brewer. Malt aroma and flavor are also variable depending on intentions of brewer. Alcoholic strength should be more than 5.6% by weight (7.0 % by volume). Experimental beers made with unusual brewing techniques are appropriately categorized as Free-Style High-Alcohol Light Ale. And unique beers brewed with uncommon fermentable sugars, grains and/or starches which contribute to alcohol content would be also categorized as Free-Style High-Alcohol Light Ale. The distinctive attributes of these special ingredients should be present in the aroma, flavor and overall balance of the beer. Examples could include maple syrup, agave, potatoes, wild rice, kaoliang or any other sources of carbohydrate not commonly used in modern beer styles. The use of rice or corn would not normally be considered unusual since these adjuncts are commonly used in beer production. However, beers made with rice or corn varieties which imbue highly distinctive flavor attributes might be categorized as Free-Style High-Alcohol Light Ale. Beers not matched to existing styles in this guideline would often be categorized in this style. Beers that made with combination of two or more other styles, and exhibit distinctive characters of each of these styles, may appropriately be categorized in this style. Diacetyl if evident should be very low. Body is medium to full.
To allow for accurate judging the brewer must provide additional information about the entry including brewer's intention about overall characters, uncommon ingredient(s) and/or unusual brewing techniques if used. If the entry is made with combination of multiple beer styles, each name of these styles must be listed in this information. Beer entries not accompanied by this information will be at a disadvantage during judging.
