21. Fresh Hop Beer

Fresh Hop Beers are brewed with freshly harvested hops and fermented with either ale or lager yeast. Such hops might be undried fresh or frozen cones or ground material, or, freshly kilned dried cones or pellets. These beers are any color of the underlying style being made with fresh hops. Chill haze is acceptable. Hop haze is allowable at any temperature. Fruity esters and malt character will vary with the style being made with fresh hops. Hop aroma and flavor are prominent exhibiting green grass-like, fresh mown hay/grass or other fresh hop characters. Hop bitterness is dependent on the style of beer being made with fresh hops. These beers are typically consumed while fresh to highlight bright fresh hop attributes. Aging these beers will typically modify and reduce fresh-hop characters resulting in unique flavor outcomes. Body is variable with underlying style.
To allow for accurate judging the brewer must provide additional information about the entry including the beer style of underlying base beer, the variety(ies) and form of fresh hops used, the timing or vessel added hops (kettle, whirlpool, hop back, fermenter, bright tank, etc.). When the base beer does not conform to any existing style in this guideline, brewer may indicate "out of existing style". Beer entries not accompanied by this information will be at a disadvantage during judging.
