17. Session Beer

Session Beers are any color of the classic beer style being made to lower strength. Appearance may vary from brilliant to hazy to cloudy with underlying style of beer being made to lower strength. Malt and hop characters are depending on the style of beer being made to lower strength. Any style of beer can be made lower in strength than described in the classic style guidelines. The goal should be to reach a balance between the style's character and the lower alcohol content. Drinkability is a character in the overall balance of these beers. Body is variable with underlying style. Beers in this style must not exceed 4.0% alcohol by weight (5.0% alcohol by volume). Beers exceeding 4.0% abw (5.0% abv) are not considered Session Beers. Beers containing less than 4.0% abw (5.0% abv), which could be appropriately categorized in any other classic or traditional style, should be categorized in that style and not categorized as a Session Beer. For example, beers such as Belgian-Style Table Beers or American-Style Pale Ales with alcohol content below 4% abw (5.0% abv) should be categorized within their appropriate categories. IPAs containing alcohol less than 4.0% abw (5.0% abv) should be categorized in the Session India Pale Ale style. Many low alcohol Belgian-Style ales are categorized as Belgian-Style Table Beer.To allow for accurate judging the brewer must provide additional information about the entry including the beer style of underlying base beer. When the base beer does not conform to any existing style in this guideline, brewer may indicate "out of existing style". Beer entries not accompanied by this information will be at a disadvantage during judging.
