10. Other Tea Beer

Other Tea Beers are any range of color from pale to dark depending on the underlying style. And often influenced by the color of added tea leaves. Haze or cloudiness caused by the catechin (a polyphenol) extracted from tea leaves is acceptable. These beers are brewed with either black tea, oolong tea, pu-er tea, or other fermented tea in either the mash, kettle, primary or secondary fermentation for providing obvious tea characters. Distinctive aroma and flavor of the tea type used should be medium to high in harmony with overall attributes of underlying base beer. Mild astringency derived from catechin is acceptable. Body is variable with underlying style. Beers brewed with a green tea are categorized as the Japanese Green Tea Beers. Beers brewed with an herbal tea or flavored tea such as apple tea, chamomile tea, earl gray, jasmine tea, roo¬ibos tea, rosehip tea, etc. are not considered to be the Other Tea Beer but should be included in the style of Herb and Spice Beer or Fruit Beer. Beers brewed with barley tea, buckwheat tea, du zhong tea, kelp tea, etc. which are not made from tea leaves should not be categorized as the Other Tea Beer.To allow for accurate judging the brewer must provide additional information about the entry including the underlying base beer, type of tea used (black tea, oolong tea, pu-er tea, etc.), the timing or vessel added tea (mash tun, kettle, fermenter, bright tank, etc.). When the base beer does not conform to any existing style in this guideline, brewer may indicate "out of existing style". Beer entries not accompanied by this information will be at a disadvantage during judging.
